A Little Provence at Home: How to Make Lavender Sachets
Capture the luxury, warmth and elegance of a sun-drenched lavender field with this simple, beautiful ritual
I have a lot of lavender growing in my yard, and every time the breeze picks up, it feels like a daydream of Provence…bees included. The aromatic scent inspired me to create a luxurious little DIY with all this gorgeous lavender available. You don’t need a plane ticket to capture a micro Provençal moment. Sometimes, the smallest luxuries can bring that feeling right into your home.
The idea is wonderfully simple, and all the better for it. I used everyday tea bags as the base, filling them with a handful of brown rice (to give a little weight), a generous scoop of dried lavender, and a few drops of lavender essential oil to deepen the scent. A quick tie with a satin or linen ribbon, something soft and beautiful, turns these sachets from functional to little drops of pure luxury. They are lovely tucked into drawers, nestled between linens, or even layered into gift wrapping for an extra gesture of thoughtfulness. I put mine in the powder room by the hand towels, in the guest bedroom wardrobe and my lingerie drawer. My husband even took one for his office.
Every time I pass by one of these beautiful hand made sachets, there's a little reminder of the south of France, a sun-warmed, effortless place where I lived and dream of going back to on a daily basis. These sachets are a simple reminder that beauty often lives in the smallest rituals, which is the European way. Lavender has been the heart of Provençal living for centuries, not just because of its fragrance, but because of what it represents: an easy sort of grace, vibrancy, and a sense of savoring everyday moments.
There’s something so chic about making these for yourself and creating something small yet impactful with your own hands. I started drying more lavender over the weekend to make little gift bundles of these for my friends, which I’ll give in cute cedar boxes. This year in LA, starting with the fires, the aftermath of it all, the general uneasy climate, has put a bit of a gray cloud over my beautiful city and a somberness to everyone I care about. Perhaps these little gifts will bring some joy to those around me who need a little lift. It feels personal, intentional, and refreshingly timeless. And isn't that the real secret to a beautiful life?
Below are my step by step instructions on how to make these easy sachets with things you probably have around the house:
What you need
Dried lavender
Uncooked Rice (I use brown rice because I like the color better)
Lavender essential oil
Loose leaf tea bags or muslin bags
Beautiful ribbons (I got mine from Michael’s, who has a great selection!)
Steps
Cut the amount of fresh lavender you want, ensuring you leave enough of the stem so you can dry them
Create a bundle with the lavender, tie with twine by the stems and hang upside down for 2 weeks. It’s important you ensure the lavender is fully dried in order to avoid any mold growing from dampness
Once dried 2 weeks later, strip the lavender buds off the stems. It should fall off pretty easily with the run of your fingers
In a bowl, add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the lavender
Scoop rice and lavender into a tea bag or muslin bag, tie and secure
Cut a piece of ribbon and tie around the top of the sachet bag
Hope you enjoy this little luxurious DIY! So chic.
